Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones

view of stone 153

Corsi 153, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 153
Name and quarry location: Bardiglio, from the Apuan Alps, Tuscany, Italy; very likely from Carrara, Massa e Carrara.
Geological description: Brecciated and veined fine-grained calcite marble, the veins of white calcite are in places iron-stained yellow.
Comments: There has been some debate about this specimen. All agree it is not from the Province of Milan, and most agree it is most likely to be a bardiglio from Carrara or elsewhere in the Apuan Alps of Italy, although some argue that the yellow coloration is never found there. It should be remembered that some stones quarried a long time ago are of varieties not obtained for perhaps hundreds of years (see for example the black and yellow marble no.131.). Another sample resembling this one is illustrated by Mielsch (1985) and in the Berlin Museum collection of ancient marbles is labelled bardiglio from Carrara.
