Name and quarry location: | Marmo palombino di Sestri, from Sestri Ponente, Genoa, Liguria, Italy |
Geological description: | Limestone; a pel-sparite with what look like birds-eyes, and with scattered molluscan and algal debris. One corner of the specimen has compact banded travertine. |
Comments: | Sestri Ponente was a source of compact banded travertine, Corsi's alabastro di Sestri (see no.335) that was used for the decoration of chapels and churches in Genoa. Just the small amount of travertine in this specimen indicates Corsi's provenance would be correct. |
