Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones

view of stone 181

Corsi 181, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 181
Name and quarry location: Nembro di San Giorgio, from Verona, Veneto, Italy; but San Giorgio is doubtful.
Geological description: Peloidal/intraclastic limestone with fine grained micrite/microspar matrix, and with pervasive solution-seams.
Comments: The Verona/Vicenza area, Veneto, Italy is indicated as the provenance by the black number painted on the reverse (see pdf of further information about Verona specimens). William Brindley, wrote in 1899 that 'S. Georgio near Verona has no ordinary vein crystalline marble - they are like the St Ambrogio Veronas'. This casts doubt on Corsi's provenance for this specimen.
