Comments: | The Verona/Vicenza area, Veneto, Italy is indicated as the provenance by the black number painted on the reverse (see pdf of further information about Verona specimens). It is perhaps from Torbe. The Upper Cretaceous limestones of the Scaglia Rossa Formation (known locally as scaglia or biancon and now commercially as pietra della Lessinia) have been quarried in the region of Torbe, Prun and Fane in Valpolicella for many centuries. This specimen is atypical. According to Jervis (1889), Torri del Benaco, Caprino Veronese, and Bosco Chiesanuova all yielded limestones known as MandorlĂ . |
