Name and quarry location: | Fior di pesco Apuano, from Stazzema, near Seravezza, Lucca, Tuscany, Italy |
Geological description: | Marble breccia - a tectonised, sheared limestone, rich in hematite evident as red colouring and metallic grey grains. |
Comments: | This sample is unusual in that it lacks any of the rounded fine-grained pink clasts so characteristic of this stone. Corsi nos.488, 954 and 955 are much more typical. Fior di pesco Apuano was first quarried in the 17th century around Stazzema and Seravezza. In the 20th century, quarries were opened in Versilia and Garfagnana, and then at various places in the Massa area. It is rarely quarried today. |
