Geological description: | Limestone breccia-conglomerate with a ferruginous matrix. It has extensive post-depositional fracturing and calcite veining. |
Comments: | The pink corner of this specimen shows a typical broccatellone appearance. Although the pink/yellow colouring is similar to that of Spanish broccatello, this limestone lacks the abundant bivalve shells of the Spanish stone. It was quarried by the ancient Romans and re-used in the Renaissance and Baroque architecture of Rome. |
