Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones

view of stone 256

Corsi 256, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 256
Name and quarry location: Astracane di Verona, lumchella di Verona, from Verona, Veneto, Italy
Geological description: Limestone. Molluscan biosparite crowded with whole and fragmentary brachiopods (probably terebratulids) and bivalves which are replaced by sparry calcite. It contains a few gastropods and has stylolites.
Comments: The Monte Rossa to which Corsi refers, is in the Euganean Hills, but the rocks there are volcanic. This specimen is a typical lumachella di Verona, the locality also indicated by the painted number on the back of the specimen (see Verona.pdf for more information). It is one of a number of specimens that reveal Corsi’s confusion about localities in the Veneto region.
