Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones

view of stone 334

Corsi 334, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 334
Name and quarry location: very probably alabastro di Volterra, from Volterra, Pisa, Tuscany, Italy
Geological description: Banded compact travertine composed of very fine fibrous crystals of calcite embedding scattered fragments of a pure white travertine.
Comments: Volterra is a classic locality for compact gypsum, the stone geologists today call 'alabaster', but travertine deposited by thermal waters occurs between Volterra and Montaione, at for example, C. Quinto, Nuove and Bagni di Mommiala, California, and Iano (Dallan, 1969). However, note that Corsi no.334 (alabastro bigio di Volterra), Corsi no.347 (alabastro di Perugia) and Corsi no.348 (alabastro di Siena) are very similar indeed. Nos. 334 and 337 have the same embedded white fragments, and pink clay coatings round some grains. Nos. 347 and 348 have same yellow filler. They probably all come from the same location. This sample looks as though it may be from the same deposit as Corsi no. 310, alabastro di Volterra.
