OUMNH Number: | 340 |
---|---|
Name and quarry location: | Alabastro di Mizzole, gioia di Mizzole, from Mizolle, Val Pantena, Verona, Veneto, Italy |
Geological description: | Compact banded travertine composed of coarse-grained calcite. |
Comments: | The Verona/Vicenza area, Veneto, Italy is indicated as the provenance by the black number painted on the reverse (see pdf of further information about Verona specimens). It is perhaps from a small mine or cave deposit in the limestone at Mizzole, but this locality is not noted as a source of travertine in Jervis 1889. 'Giora' is most probably a typographic error for 'gioia' (jewel or gem), see also Corsi 343. Likewise, Mizzole is mis-spelt. |
