view of stone 352

Corsi 352, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 352
Name and quarry location: 'Alabastro dorato d'Orte', locality unknown
Geological description: Coarse to very coarse nearly transparent granular calcite, perhaps a hydrothermal vein deposit rather than a travertine. Some grey micritic limestone matrix is present which contains white grains probably of algae.
Comments: Although Orte, near Viterbo, is a source of 'alabastri' (see Jervis (1889) and Corsi 353), the great marble-hunter William Brindley noted around 1905 that this sample was not from Orte, an opinion that was affirmed by Mary Porter writing in 1966.
