Name and quarry location: | almost certainly Travertino di Civitavecchia, from Civitavecchia, Lazio, Italy |
Geological description: | Calcite travertine deposit, with algal(probably cyanobacterial) laminites. Coloured bands are tinted by hematite (red) and goethite (yellow). |
Comments: | No records of travertines from the province of Milan have been found. This stone resembles a specimen from Civitavecchia, province of Roma, Lazio, Italy in the De Santis collection in Rome, which shows a similar 'way-up' of banded and crystalline layers, and makes Civitavecchia an altogether more probable source. |
