Name and quarry location: Alabastra di Monte Alcino, from Montalcino, Siena, Tuscany, Italy  
Geological description: A reddish brown very coarsely crystalline banded calcite travertine with ferruginous inclusions running parallel or perpendicular to banding.  
Comments: Jervis (1889) writes 'Trovasi in certa quantità presso Castelnuova dell'Abbate, sotto forma di grandi ammassi sottostanti a straticelli di travertino.' Merrill (1893) also writes that 'at Castelnuova dell'Abate, in the commune of Monte Alcino, considerable quantities [of cave marble] are found underlying a Quaternary travertine.' The placename is now generally abbreviated to Montalcino.
