view of stone 38

Corsi 38, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 38
Name and quarry location: Marmo scuro di Trento, from Trent, Trentino-Alto Adige, Italy (not confirmed)
Geological description: Biomicrite limestone densely packed with tests of foraminifera and other plankton, with calcite-filled veins and (on the sides of the specimen) dendrites of black manganese oxides. The whole stone has ferruginous staining constrained by the fracture pattern.
Comments: The distribution of the iron-staining is analogous to that of pietra paesina (ruin marble), but this is a rather coarser-grained limestone.
