view of stone 405

Corsi 405, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 405
Name and quarry location: Breccia di Settebasi, from Isle of Skyros, Sporades, Central Greece
Geological description: Sheared fine-grained calcite marble breccia.
Comments: The stone which Corsi called breccia di Settibasi is the same stone that ancient authors called breccia di Sciro, from the Island of Skyros, Greece. This stone, with its white and occasional pink clasts, is markedly sheared compared to those from seravezza and other Apuan Alps localities which tend to have similar coloration. The Skyros stone is often somewhat iron-stained yellow. Today, white marbles are still quarried on Skyros.
