Corsi 457, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 457
Name and quarry location: Griotte, from the Haute Pyrénées, France
Geological description: Devonian hematite-rich fine-grained nodular limestone with extensive stylolite development. White areas are calcite spar-filled goniatites
Comments: This is typical griotte, named after the French for the morello cherry, and alluding to its nodular nature. Griotte has been quarried at a number of locations in the French Pyrenees, for example the quarry at Espiadet in the Campan valley which supplied stone for decorating the royal palaces of the 18th century. Griotte can vary from dark pink, through rich red to dark brown.
