OUMNH Number: | 488 |
---|---|
Name and quarry location: | Fior di pesco Apuano, from Seravezza, Lucca, Tuscany, Italy |
Geological description: | Sheared marble breccia; perhaps a tectonised burrowed/nodular limestone. |
Comments: | This pink/red stone is a typical fior di pesco Apuano. Because Corsi's number is missing from the back of the specimen, Henry Miers has correlated it with the description in the Catalogo Ragionato. The rock is certainly not from the Verona area. Fior di pesco Apuano was first quarried in the 17th century around Stazzema and Seravezza. In the 20th century, quarries were opened in Versilia and Garfagnana, and then at various places in the Massa area. It is rarely quarried today. |
