Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones

view of stone 492

Corsi 492, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 492
Name and quarry location: probably Gialletto di Torri del Benaco, from Torri del Benaco, Verona, Veneto, Italy
Geological description: Debris-flow deposit of limestone intraclasts in fossiliferous micritic matrix. Clay-coated stylolites are conspicuous.
Comments: The painted number on the back of the specimen indicates a Verona/Vicenza provenance for this limestone (see Verona.pdf for more information). There is some debate as to whether the specimen numbers for nos. 492 and 493 have been transposed, as the names and descriptions of the specimens given in Corsi's Catalogo ragionato do not match the specimens, although the localities appears to be correct.
