Corsi 593, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 593
Name and quarry location: Marmo di Santa Cattarina dell'Elba, from the island of Elba, Livorno, Tuscany, Italy
Geological description: Serpentinite, finely brecciated and veined with calcite.
Comments: Jervis (1889) records an ophicalcite obtained 2km from 'Rio nell'Elba' in a place called Santa Caterina'. Zuccagni-Orlandini (1842) describes the stone as 'superb'. The brecciation is particularly small and even, in Corsi's samples (nos.593, 963) and in samples seen in other museums.
