view of stone 726

Corsi 726, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 726
Name and quarry location: Rhodonite, from Maloe Sedelnikovo, Ekaterinburg, Sverdlovsk Oblast, Russia
Geological description: Massive pink rhodonite, with brown bustamite and other manganese silicates. Black manganese oxides emanate from fractures.
Comments: Rhodonite forms by contact metamorphism of manganese deposits. Corsi's specimen would have come from a fine large deposit discovered in the mid 18th century at Maloe Sedelnikovo near Ekaterinburg. Originally thought to be a fine-grained compact form of rose quartz, the mineral was analysed and published as distinct mineral species called rhodonite in 1819. That was perhaps after Corsi had obtained this sample, and might explain why he was unaware of its true identity. The base of Corsi's specimen has been augmented with strips of the stone to make it the required size.
