Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones

view of stone 73

Corsi 73, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 73
Name and quarry location: probably marmo nero di Roverè, perhaps from Prun, but more likely Roverè di Velo, Verona, Veneto, Italy
Geological description: Bituminous bioclastic limestone. The sides of the specimen show it has a distinctly laminar texture.
Comments: The Verona/Vicenza area, The painted number on the back of the specimen indicates a Verona/Vicenza provenance for this limestone (see Verona.pdf for more information). Jervis (1889) makes no mention of a black or grey limestone from Prun, but he does describe a dark grey marble called nero di Roverè, from the nearby locality of Roverè di Velo (since 1908 called Roverè Veronese), about 10 miles northwest of Prun. It is likely that Corsi's specimen is that stone.
References: Jervis (1889) 144

Corsi's classification: Class 1. Marbles; Section 1. Monochrome marbles; Species 6. Black marbles
Corsi's text: 40.3 Pomorolo di Prun presso Verona
