Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones

view of stone 782

Corsi 782, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 782
Name and quarry location: Sicilian jasper, diaspro di Monreale, from Monreale, Palermo, Sicily, Italy
Geological description: Heavily fractured red jasper, fractures are agate-filled. Side view shows some yellowish agate with platy inclusions of pyrite/marcasite. There are some small infills of crystalline quartz and a few quartz-filled fractures.
Comments: Corsi had originally labelled this specimen '189.24', a red jasper from Giuliana of an otherwise virtually identical description in his catalogue. It could be from either locality. Jervis (1889) refers to jasper of many colours, and agate, from Monreale.
