view of stone 840

Corsi 840, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 840
Name and quarry location: Granito rosso antico, sienite, from between Aswan and Shellal District, Nile Valley, Egypt
Geological description: Coarse-grained biotite granite with megacrysts of salmon K-felspar.
Comments: This stone is Harrell's variety 'a' of the Aswan granites and granodiorites described on his website. It is a typical example of the granite known as 'sienite' from Aswan, but should not be confused with the petrologcal term syenite (which it is not). It is found in a number of localities between Aswan and the Shellal district.
