OUMNH Number: 901
Name and quarry location: Marmo salino dell'Elba, from the island of Elba, Livorno, Tuscany, Italy
Geological description: Fairly coarse-grained calcite marble; bands of sulphide/oxide impurities evident on side of specimen.
Comments: According to Hull (1872) the quarry for white marble was opened by Napoleon when he was in exile on Elba between 1814 and 1815, but largely abandoned after his departure. Zuccagni-Orlandini (1842) tells us the marble was quarried at Capo d'Arco, and specifically at Punta delle Cannelle, to the south east of the island.
