Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones

view of stone 902

Corsi 902, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 902
Name and quarry location: Probably giallo antico from Chemtou, Tunisia, but possibly Giallo di Siena, Siena yellow from Monte Arrenti near Sovicille, Siena, Tuscany, Italy
Geological description: Very fine-grained calcite marble. A fractured, stylolitised, metamorphosed fossiliferous biomicrite limestone. Veins and voids are calcite-filled, and there are abundant small black manganese oxide dendrites.
Comments: Although thought by Corsi to be from Siena, this is strikingly similar to giallo antico from Chemtou, Tunisia used by McMarmilloyd Ltd for restoration work in the National Gallery, London, a sample of which has been lodged in the Oxford collection.
