Corsi 918, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 918
Name and quarry location: Pavonazzetto, from Iscehisar (Synnada), Afyonkarahisar Province, Turkey
Geological description: Sheared breccia of marble clasts.
Comments: This stone was correctly identified and provenanced by Corsi. It was quarried from about the first century BC to the sixth century AD at a location where white marble was also extracted. The white marble is still quarried and is known today in the trade as Afyon white. A distinctive feature of marmo pavonazzetto is the coarse sugary grain and very diffuse clast boundaries. These distinguish is very easily from other stones named pavonazzetto quarried around Carrara and Seravezza in Italy.
