Name and quarry location: | almost certainly Vytina black, from Vytina, Arcadia, Peloponnese, Greece |
Geological description: | Fine-grained black limestone with white shells of rudist bivalves; Cretaceous age. |
Comments: | This stone, from near the village of Vytina (Vitina), was worked in ancient Roman times, but most quarrying has taken place in the 20th century. The jagged edged white rudist bivalves distinguish it from other black and white fossil marbles such as those of Kilkenny in Ireland and Derbyshire in England, which are of Carboniferous age and have faunas rich in brachiopods, crinoids and corals. This is the bigio morato of some authors, for example Mielsch (1985). |
