Schaus' swallowtail butterfly
The Schaus' swallowtail is quite a large pretty butterfly. This has made it popular with butterfly collectors - unfortunately, over-collecting is one of the reasons it is now an endangered species.
Breeding programmes have been set up to increase the numbers of this species in the wild. Many hundreds of butterflies have been released from these programmes, and butterfly numbers may now be beginning to increase again.
