It is a fossil ammonoid - an animal related to ammonites. It was found in Lancashire in rocks that formed towards the end of the Carboniferous period, between 320 and 290 million years ago.

Ammonites are an extinct group of mollusc - they lived in the sea and were protected by a coiled shell.
