The Carboniferous

Fossil
Did you know what this fossil was?

It is a fossil leaf. It was found in Illinois in America in rocks just over 300 million years old.

Plants were very important during this period. Great swamps covered large parts of Europe and America. Plants grew in these swamps - their remains fossilised to form the coal we use today to heat and light our homes.
