The Devonian

Fossil When: 417 to 354 million years ago.

Animals: Invertebrates live in the oceans, but fish are becoming more common (but not many of them look like those we see today). More animals begin to live on land.
Plants: More plants appear on land - they are growing bigger and more complex than the first land plants.

Firsts: Insects and amphibians appear in the Devonian.
Lasts: Most things lived through the Devonian into the Carboniferous.

Notes: It is known as 'The age of fishes', but other animals are important too - amphibians were the first vertebrates to walk on the land. They looked like large newts or salamanders.
