OUMNH Number: 1
Name and quarry location: Marmo Greco duro; most probably Thasian marble, marmo Thaso from Cape Vathy, Island of Thasos (Thassos), East Macedonia and Thrace, Greece
Geological description: Medium-grained dolomite marble
Comments: Although the grain-size and appearance of this pure white marble resembles that of the island of Paros, it is composed of dolomite rather than calcite and most probably comes from the island of Thasos. Corsi’s alternative name Greco duro is used today for Thasian marble and alludes to the fact that dolomite is a slightly harder mineral than calcite. For more information about Parian marble, see the entry for this stone in Corsi’s Catalogo ragionato.
