OUMNH Number: 10
Name and quarry location: Marmo bianco di Pont Canavese, from Pont Canavese, Turin, Piedmont, Italy
Geological description: Medium-grained calcite marble
Comments: Jervis (1889) tells us Pont Canavese in the province of Turin produced a fine-grained white crystalline marble. Borghi et al (2009) describe the petrographic and isotopic characteristics of this and other Piedmont white marbles used in antiquity. In particular they note that marble from Pont Canavese is relatively strontium rich, which may help to distinguish it from other white marbles of the area.
