Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones

view of stone 132

Corsi 132, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 132
Name and quarry location: most probably giallo e nero di Carrara, from Carrara, Massa e Carrara, Tuscany, Italy
Geological description: Finely brecciated weakly metamorphosed fine-grained limestone with veins of saccharoidal to fibrous calcite; some veins and stylolites coloured yellow by included goethite.
Comments: This is most likely to be from Carrara (like no.131) rather than nearby Portovenere. The name 'portoro' although most famously applied to the stone from the Portovenere area, was used colloquially for any black and yellow 'marble' according to Jervis (1889).
