Corsi Collection of Decorative Stones

view of stone 163

Corsi 163, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 163
Name and quarry location: Diaspro tenero di Sicilia, from Capo Gallo, Palermo, Sicily, Italy
Geological description: Syn-sedimentary breccia with fragments of Triassic-Jurassic limestone (dark) and pink Jurassic-Cretaceous limestone.
Comments: Corsi says that he has followed Borch's 'Lythologie Sicilienne' (1778) in attributing names and quarry locations to his Sicilian soft jaspers, but not all his locations are mentioned by Borch, nor do descriptions always match. 'Gallo' is referred to by Borch for a soft jasper, and probably refers to Capo Gallo. However, nos. 162, 163 and 170 may all be from the same block of stone.
