OUMNH Number: 190
Name and quarry location: Marmo giallo di Saltrio, from Saltrio, Milan, Lombardy, Italy
Geological description: Recrystallised limestone or marble, with calcite-filled fractures, and with ferruginous orange stylolites.
Comments: Saltrio is better known for grey marbles although it does yield a dark yellow compact limestone according to Jervis (1889). However this stone looks rather like giallo antico from Chemtou, Tunisia, a point noted since the early 20th century. However, it fluoresces yellow under longwave uv radiation, a property not shared by other samples of giallo antico in Corsi collection.
