OUMNH Number: 249
Name and quarry location: Belgian red marble, rouge royale, from Namur, Belgium
Geological description: Devonian fine-grained red burrowed limestone with calcite-filled stromatactis. It is rich in bioclasts. Fossils include articulate brachiopods, orthocone nautiloids, and echinoderm debris.
Comments: This is Belgian red marble (also called rouge royale, rouge griotte), quarried in the Namur area of Belgium. The brownish red colouring, fossil fauna and grey-white stromatactis are typical of the Belgian stone. Exactly why it was confused with an Italian stone is not clear; perhaps it had been brought to Italy for cutting and finishing.
