| Comments: |
This is Belgian red marble (also called rouge royale, rouge griotte), quarried in the Namur area of Belgium. The brownish red colouring, fossil fauna and grey-white stromatactis are typical of the Belgian stone. Exactly why it was confused with an Italian stone is not clear; perhaps it had been brought to Italy for cutting and finishing.
