OUMNH Number: 333
Name and quarry location: Alabastro ciliegino, locality unknown
Geological description: Compact banded travertine composed mainly of fine-grained calcite. Iron oxides trapped within the botryoidal structure of the calcite give the distinctive appearance.
Comments: Alabastro ciliegino, with its distinctive bubbly appearance, is often found in collections of ancient stones but the location of the quarries is not known. The name 'ciliegino' means little cherries, today used especially in the context of cherry tomatoes.
