OUMNH Number: 343
Name and quarry location: Alabastro gioia del ponte di Vezia, from Verona, Veneto, Italy
Geological description: Compact travertine composed of very coarse columnar calcite. The surface has a particularly waxy surface indicating it may have been acid-etched.
Comments: The black number on the reverse of the specimen suggests the stone may be The Verona/Vicenza area, but no place called 'ponte di Vezia' has been located in that area. 'Giosa' is most probably a typographic error for 'gioia' (jewel or gem), see also no. 340, The Verona area.
