Corsi 351, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 351
Name and quarry location: 'Alabastro bianco d'Orte', probably Egyptian alabaster,
Geological description: Coarse to very coarse compact crystalline calcite, with a little banding suggesting this is a travertine.
Comments: Although Orte, near Viterbo, is a source of 'alabastri' (see Jervis (1889) and Corsi 353), the great marble-hunter William Brindley noted around 1905 that this sample was not from Orte, an opinion that was affirmed by Mary Porter writing in 1966. It is very likely to be an Egyprian alabaster.
