Corsi 396, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 396
Name and quarry location: Breccia traccagnina, locality unknown
Geological description: Polymict limestone conglomerate with solution-modified sutured clast boundaries and stylolites.
Comments: The provenances of breccia traccagnina (so-called 'harlequin breccias') used in ancient times are generally not known. Breccias can occur in quite small deposits which may have been worked out. However, nos. 396 and 398 strongly resemble, and may be Balkan red from Bulgaria which is being quarried in the early 21st century.
