OUMNH Number: 428
Name and quarry location: Mandolato di Lubiara, nembro rosato, from Lubiara, Caprino Veronese, Verona, Veneto, Italy
Geological description: Upper Jurassic or Cretaceous burrowed nodular biomicrite limestone crowded with skeletal grains. Note the extersitu stylolite development.
Comments: The Verona/Vicenza area, Veneto, Italy is indicated as the provenance by the black number painted on the reverse (see pdf of further information about Verona specimens). Jervis (1889, 134) refers to a quarry at Lubiara working a reddish white compact limestone. The 'marble' quarries in the area are today referred to on local internet sites. Today this stone is called nembro rosato, but in the past it was known as mandorla or mandolato from the Italian for almond, alluding to its nodular structure.
