The Verona/Vicenza area, Veneto, Italy is indicated as the provenance by the black number painted on the reverse (see pdf of further information about Verona specimens). Jervis (1889, 134) refers to a quarry at Lubiara working a reddish white compact limestone. The 'marble' quarries in the area are today referred to on local internet sites. Today this stone is called nembro rosato, but in the past it was known as mandorla or mandolato from the Italian for almond, alluding to its nodular structure.
