OUMNH Number: 442
Name and quarry location: Breccia di Mastro Simone, from S.Angelo Romano, Roma, Lazio, Italy
Geological description: Limestone; a burrowed nodular biopel-micrite, perhaps from the Jurassic Rosso ammonitico formation.
Comments: Sant'Angelo di Capoccia, a town in the province of Rome near Tivoli, takes its name from a 13th century feudo called Capoccia. It is now called Sant'Angelo Romano. It is in an area of limestone with karst features.Jervis (1889) describes a brecciated limestone with small 'elementi' of pink on a reddish-brown ground from Sant'Angelo in Capoccia, which may be this stone. It should not be confused with pietra Simona, a sandstone, found in some collections.
