Pelagic limestone. A burrowed nodular fossiliferous micritic limestone with stylolites and solution seams, most probably of Upper Jurassic age, from the upper part of the Rosso Ammonitico Formation.

The painted number on the back of the specimen indicates a Verona/Vicenza provenance for this limestone (see Verona.pdf for more information). There is some debate as to whether the specimen numbers for nos. 492 and 493 have been transposed, as the names and descriptions of the specimens given in Corsi's Catalogo ragionato do not match the specimens, although the localities appears to be correct. Today this stone is called nembro rosato, but in the past it was known as mandorla or mandolato from the Italian for almond, alluding to its nodular structure.
