Corsi 505, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 505
Name and quarry location: Marmo venato di Tivoli, from Tivoli, Roma, Lazio, Italy
Geological description: Recrystallised, probably originally bioturbated, micritic or microspar limestone with extensive stylolites and calcite filled fractures.
Comments: Tivoli, Lazio, Italy, may be correct. Both compact limestone and the more familiar travertine have been quarried at Tivoli according to Jervis (1889). Nos. 504 and 505 both have 'M.Ven.' [marmo venato?] written on the reverse indicating they were probably supplied by an agent as examples of the same stone.
