Corsi 725, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 725
Name and quarry location: Moss agate, agata di Sardegna, from Sardinia, Italy
Geological description: White chalcedony (cryptocrystalline quartz) with subtle agate banding, and extensive dendritic iron/manganese oxides.
Comments: Sardinia, Italy, may be correct provenance. Jervis (1881; 137) records a chalcedony with dendritic pyrolusite from Alghero, Province of Sassari. Corsi's specimen is a an irregular shape piece to which other slices and infillings of white plaster have been added to give the required external shape. It is partly hollow.
