OUMNH Number: 739
Name and quarry location: Sicilian jasper, diaspro-agata di Milazzo, from Milazzo, Messina, Sicily, Italy
Geological description: Brecciated jasper; matrix forms faint agate halos around clasts, elsewhere it is colourless quartz. Single crystals may enclose many small clasts or fill a whole fracture.
Comments: From Altavilla Milicia, Province of Palermo, Sicily, Italy. This samples resembles a jasper from ‘St Miceli’ in the Naturhistorisches Museum Wien, perhaps the San Michele stream in Altavilla Milicia referred to by Montana (1998). Tata (1772) describes samples from 'Contrada della Milicia' and 'Milicia' which he locates to the town now called Altavilla Millicia. Also compare Montana (1998) pl.141 and see Jervis (1881, 1889).
