view of stone 755

Corsi 755, approx. 145 x 73 x 40 mm, © Oxford University Museum of Natural History

OUMNH Number: 755
Name and quarry location: probably Sicilian jasper, diaspro di Sicilia, from Sicily, Italy
Geological description: Jasper - a silicified ferruginous limestone, with agate-filled voids and patches of creamy white crystalline calcite. Goethite forms spherular inclusions in orange jasper.
Comments: Perhaps calcedonio di Volterra from Monterufoli, Pomerance, near Volterra, but it is more likely to be Sicilian, matching ‘Diaspro rosso e giallo fiorito di Sicilia' in Corsi’s tabletop of modern marbles in the Natural History Museum, London.
