OUMNH Number: 769
Name and quarry location: Sicilian jasper, diaspro di Piano Maglio, from Piano Maglio, Altofonte, Palermo, Sicily, Italy
Geological description: Heavily fractured banded jasper with rhombohedral carbonate mineral inclusions (dolomite/siderite?). Fractures are filled with grey agate, in turn filled with colourless quartz. Fine calcite or ankerite veins cross the specimen.
Comments: Piano dei Magli is a locality referred to by Borch, according to Montana (1998). Tata (1772) also cites this locality for jasper, and says it is near Parco, a locality close to Monreale. It is now called Piano Maglio and is part of the commune of Altofonte (formerly called Parco, or Parcu in Sicilian).
