Name and quarry location: | Statuary marble, marmo statuario, most probably from Carrara, Seravezza or elsewhere in the Apuan Alps of Tuscany, Italy; but could also be from Mt Pentéli, Attica, Greece |
Geological description: | Fine-grained calcite marble |
Comments: | Statuario is the term used for the finest white statuary marble from Carrara, Seravezza and the other quarries in the Apuan Alps supplying white marble. However Pentellic marble (0001) is of similar appearance and grain-size and isotopic and trace element analyses would be needed to distinguish the two stones. |
