| Geological description: |
Very fine-grained calcite marble. A fractured, stylolitised, metamorphosed fossiliferous biomicrite limestone. Veins and voids are calcite-filled, and there are abundant small black manganese oxide dendrites.

Although thought by Corsi to be from Siena, this is strikingly similar to giallo antico from Chemtou, Tunisia used by McMarmilloyd Ltd for restoration work in the National Gallery, London, a sample of which has been lodged in the Oxford collection.
